Anime comes in two main forms. Its partner, manga, is comics that often are made into anime.
Movies are the first form of anime. Movies were better at first because few people had television. Some famous movies from anime are "Phoenix" and "Space Fire Bird 2772." Now they have been replaced by television because of its cheapness and availability to everyone. Some popular anime series shown on television are Gundam and Dragon Ball Z.

In the 50's anime found its beginnings in artists. Some of the most well known were Katsushiha Hokusai, Junichi Kouchi, Oten Shimokawa, Osamu Tezuka, and Seitaro Kitayama. In the 60's there were Sanpei Shirato, Hayao Miyazaki, and Osamu Tezuka.
In the 70's many new artists came in Suiko Tagawa, Go Nagai, Tatsuo Yoshida, and of Course Osamu Tezuka. Unfortunately, in the 80's few new artists were introduced because of the fact that anime was already well defined. One popular Artist was Keiji Nakazawa. Ozamu Tezuka was alive for the beginning but died before the end of the decade.
