Nobody knows for sure where or when sumo wrestling began. All over the world evidence of ancient versions of the sport have been found. In fact, the oldest written records go back to the 8th century. The sport of sumo wrestling is a 2,000-year-old type of wrestling that originated in Japan. Sumo wrestling appears in the earliest histories of Japan, the Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki, and in early Shinto. By the end of the Heian period (794-1185), it was established as a court ritual for about three hundred years. Japanese Sumo Wrestling is one of the oldest martial arts in Japan.

Sumo wrestling is a power sport. It is a contest of strength, technique, and balance. Every child has a dream of what they want to become in their future. While we might dream of becoming a professional soccer player, children in Japan might dream of becoming a professional sumo grand champion.
