Angkor Wat is probably the most beautiful religious structure in the world. It was built in the 1100's within the ancient capitol of Cambodia: Angkor, just outside the town of Siem Reap, near the center of Cambodia. The form of the structure is supposed to look like the mythological home of the Hindu gods. It was built to honor Vishnu, who is one of the Hindu gods, and the Khmer Empire, which was a very wealthy civilization that lied in the historical city of Angkor, Cambodia during the era that the Wat was built. It is also supposed to be an astrological observatory for monks. There is a time during the year when the moon rises directly above the center of the structure, right between the peaks surrounding the Angkor Wat.
King Suryavarman II was a man that called himself the "human form of the actual god King Suryavaman II". He was historically supposed to come down to earth during the 1100's and commanded the Angkor Wat's construction. Once he died, the Angkor Wat became his tomb. King Suryavaman II still lies in his tomb in the central structure to this day.
