Native Plants of Japan

In Japan, there are an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 native plants. Among them are many flowering trees such as flowering cherry. In fact, in Japan, there is a holiday called the Cherry Blossom Viewing festival.

Maple, azalea, and pine are other trees native to Japan. Some of the flowers native to Japan are camellia and orchid. Orchids are very beautiful and well known flowers, and they do not grow only in Japan. Some orchids, such as the calypso orchid, grow in Alaska! Orchids grow all over the world.

Japan's climate varies amazingly. In the north, it has a climate similar to Alaska's, but in the south, the climate is not so different from that of Hawaii. In some of Japan's southern islands, hibiscus, a brightly colored flower that is common in Hawaii, grows.
