Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang is the most well-known Taoist symbol. The symbol is comprised of two curving shapes interlocked with each other in a circle. One shape is white (Yang), and the other (Yin or Ying) is black. The most traditional interpretation is that of Yin representing the feminine aspects of nature, and Yang representing the masculine. However, Yin & Yang can symbolize any pair of opposites: good/evil, masculine/feminine, white/black (obviously), or any other opposites. The reason for the little dots of opposing colors in each shape is that Taoists believe that nothing is purely itself; there is always a little of its opposite in it. Taoists believe that when humans obstruct nature's chosen path, they disharmonize Yin and Yang.
