YEAR LONG SUPPORT GROUPS-
Cancer Support Groups:
In collaboration with Alaska Regional
Hospital, Romig has been chosen to pilot CHAT (Cancer Has an Affect
on Teens) Support Groups for students who have a family member
or friend with cancer. The groups will be held every other week
during 7th grade and 8th grade lunch periods. Food will be provided
by Alaska Regional Hospital's Cancer Care Alliance. (These
groups meet ASD Social and Emotional Learning Standards for Self-Awareness/
Self-Management/ Social Awareness)
Students with Deployed Parents:
This support group is for students
with family members who are deployed in the military or in a military
support capacity. This group will meet 3 - 4 times throughout
the school year. (This group meets ASD Social and Emotional
Learning Standards for Self-Awareness/Self Management/ Social
Management/ Social Awareness)
FIRST SEMESTER SUPPORT GROUPS-
Anger Management Group:
This group is for student's who have problems controlling their
anger responses. Students learn how to recognize their own anger
triggers and responses and how to chose more appropriate ways
of managing these feelings. The Anger Management group will meet
every other week. (This group meets ASD Social and Emotional
Learning Standards for Self-Awareness/ Self Management/ Social
Awareness/ Social Management.)
SECOND SEMESTER SUPPORT GROUPS-
Grief Support Group:
This group is for students who had
a loved one or friend pass and are struggling with the loss. This
group provides social and emotional support by helping students
identify their ways of grieving, their support systems, grief
information, cultural aspect of grieving, and remembrance activities.
The group will meet every other week. (This group meets ASD
Social and Emotional Learning Standards for Self-Awareness/Social
Awareness/Self-Management).
Boys' Group:
This group is to support male students
through their middle school years by providing appropriate peer
support, confidence building, and social and emotional learning
skills. This group will meet every other week. (This group
meets ASD Social and Emotional Learning Standards for Self-Awareness/
Self-Management/ Social Awareness/ Social Management).
AGGRESSORS, VICTIMS, and BYSTANDERS CURRICULUM:
This curriculum is being taught first semester
to all 7th graders at Romig. AVB is a "think-first"
model of conflict resolution that helps students to:
* Pause and keep cool.
* Understand what is going on before jumping to conclusions.
* See how bystanders and victims can prevent or escalate a fight.
* Appreciate the perspectives of others.
* Define their problems and goals in ways that will not lead to
fights.
* Generate and act on positive solutions.

Self-Management/ Social Awareness/ Social Management.)
