Belin-Blank Exceptional Student Talent Search (BESTS)

University of Iowa

 

Qualifying students in grades 7-8 register for BESTS and either the SAT or the ACT in one step.  All BESTS students are eligible for summer programs at the University of Iowa.  Advanced level courses are offered in two one-week sessions.  Students may attend one or both sessions.  Courses include such topics as the human genome, digital music production, engineering, physics, fiction writing, and more. 

 

95th percentile or higher in reading, language, math, science, or total battery on a standardized test (for example, the Terra Nova)

Register online by:

  Dec. 26 if you plan to take the Jan. 26 SAT

Or

  Jan. 4 if you plan to take the Feb. 9 ACT

Note:  You sign up for BEST and for the test of your choice in one step.

$55 total for BEST registration and ACT fee

Center for Talented Youth (CTY)

Johns Hopkins University

 

Qualifying students register for CTY and then sign up separately for the SAT or the ACT.  Students who score high enough are eligible for CTY summer programs.  Three-week sessions are offered at 12 campuses in six states.  Courses include astronomy, nuclear science, writing graphic novels, logic, and many more in the areas of math, science, humanities, and writing. 

95th percentile or higher in one or more areas on a standardized test, such as the Terra Nova

³Advanced² on one or more sections of the Alaska Standards-Based Assessment

Register for CTY by mail by Nov. 20 or online by Dec. 1.

Educational Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY)

Stanford University

 

EPGY is strictly a summer program offered at Stanford University.  It does not include a talent search component, so students are not required to take the SAT or ACT.  Rather, they are evaluated on a variety of criteria.  Two-week sessions offered for students entering 6th and 7th grade.  Three- and four-week sessions are offered for students entering 8th grade and higher.  All sessions involve intensive study in a single subject.  For 6th and 7th graders, topics include math, physical science, computer programming, creative writing, and expository writing.  Students now in 8th grade select from a variety of topics in the areas of computer programming,, math, science and engineering, humanities, writing, music, and business.

No specific test or score is required, but admissions are competitive.

 

Students who apply are evaluated on test scores on any standardized test (Terra Novas, ability tests, SAT, etc.), student work samples, grades, and teacher recommendation(s).

Application and program information for 2008 will be available online in December 2007.  At that time, students should complete an online, preliminary application.  Full application will be available for download after completing the preliminary application.

Note:  Documentation, including copies of test score reports, student work sample, school transcript, and teacher recommendation is required.

Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG)

 

SIG offers three-week residential programs at eleven campuses in seven states.  Sites include Princeton, Emory, UCLA, Berkeley, University of Texas, University of Michigan, and others.  SIG offers summer programs, rather than a talent search.  Sessions are interdisciplinary, with five periods a day.  Students typically select two or three academic courses, one or two arts or recreational courses, and one tutorial.  A variety of choices in math and science, writing, humanities, visual and performing arts, and other areas are offered.  Courses include such topics as debate, fantasy fiction writing, zoology, crime scene investigation, drama, and more.

No specific test or score is required.

 

Eligible students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Students are eligible to  apply by meeting one of the following criteria:

 

  Participation in any Academic Talent Search Program

  95th percentile in at least one content area on a standardized test

€ A score in the gifted range on the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or SSATB.

  Identification as gifted or successful participation in a school gifted program.
