Romig Middle School 2009-2010

 Gifted/Enriched 8th Grade Team

Expectations

Mrs. Bascom, Mrs. Grib, Mrs. Hess, Ms. Lynch

Dear Students and Parents,

One of the first things most students usually want to know when they enter an honors class is how they will be evaluated.  The teachers on the Chilkat Team have discussed our expectations for our students, and we know that you are capable of wonderful things!  We will not accept work that is anything less than that of which you are capable! That means, we expect 100% effort.  Does that mean you wonÕt make mistakes? NO! Does that mean that perfection is expected for every assignment? NO! We expect your best effort--whatever the task, AND a positive attitude.  It means being courteous to others in the classroom, showing respect for peopleÕs belongings, feelings, and beliefs, following directions, and being willing to learn.

Grading Policy:

We will try to be as fair to you as possible.  Every attempt will be made to explain lessons and expectations thoroughly.  You must turn in work on time, come to class prepared with paper, pencil, pen, book, and a positive attitude.  Assignments (class work, homework, projects, etc.) are independent work to be completed on your own.  When assignments are group work this will be made very clear.  Grades are based on class work, homework, oral presentations, projects, quizzes, tests, and the student agenda planner.

The Chilkat Team grading

scale is as follows:

A- 90-100

            actions for all parties.

Parent Meetings:

Parents may arrange meetings by contacting our Gifted Coordinator  Shelly Andreson at 742-5200 or 8th grade counselor Bobby Jones at 742-5200.

Chilkat Team Make-up Work Policy:

As is stated in the ASD Middle School Guidelines-

Students with illnesses, pre-acknowledged, and activity absences may make up work.  Forms for pre-acknowledged absences are available in the office.  One day of make-up privilege will be granted for each day of absence up to a maximum of five school days, regardless of the length of the absence.  If notification of a test was given before the absence, the student will be expected to take the test the day he/she returns to school.

Students who are suspended from school may have make-up privileges.  These privileges will be explained in the suspension letter.

The teacher will assign a grade of Ò0Ó for any test or class work due on the day(s) of truancy.

Late Work Policy-

The Chilkat Team strongly feels that students must stay current in their assignments to be successful in school.  Most subjects are cumulative, especially within a unit.  Therefore if a student does not do their assignments, they are unprepared for class the next day, causing them to fall even further behind.  This often snowballs, causing the student huge backlogs of late work.  To discourage this, and to prepare students for high school and college, where late work is often not accepted at all, the Chilkat team has a stringent late work policy.

Daily Work:

One day late - worth 65%.

Projects:

All projects must be submitted on the assigned due date; all students are provided adequate notification of project submission deadlines.

NOTE: Students may earn extra credit in select classes.  If extra credit is available, students must have no missing assignments.

Keep in mind, in real life:

If you are one day late turning in your Permanent Fund application- you get no money.

If you are one day late on your credit card payment, you will be charged a late fee, plus perhaps have a new higher interest rate and higher minimum payment.

If you are one day late paying your taxes, the IRS will charge you penalties and fees.

If you are one day late paying a traffic ticket, you may have a warrant out for your arrest.

If you are one day late returning your DVD to Blockbuster, you will be charged a late fee.

If you are 15 minutes late for the plane, your seat will already have been given away.

If you are 10 minutes late pulling the cookies out of the oven, they're ruined.

If you are 5 minutes late leaving the building after school, you have missed the bus.

If you are late to class even a few seconds after the bell rings, you will have a tardy detention.

Parent Volunteers

for the Chilkat Team

The Chilkat team is very excited about working with your children, and already we have several plans in motion.  Our hope is that there will be many opportunities for field trips and special projects throughout the school year.  Parent help is vital, both on a weekly basis as well as on those Òspecial days.Ó

The weekly help may include such things as: filing papers into portfolios, running off work on the copier, cutting paper, working with students, gathering supplies, grading, etc.  If you are available and would be willing to come in on a weekly basis, please sign your name and phone number below, and one of us will contact you.  If you would like to help with field trips, or working on special projects, please indicate that as well.

Thank you for your cooperation and involvement.
