Anchorage was founded in 1915 and it is the current largest city in Alaska. Anchorage was originally inhabited by the Tanaina Indians. The South central region was explored by Captain James Cook in 1778. Population booms during these events, the construction of the Alaska Railroad, the two military bases during World War II, and oil development beginning in 1957.
