The oldest Russian Orthodox church in North America can also be found in Unalaska. The Orthodox church was constructed in 1825, but they also enlarged it in 1896. The Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Ascension of Christ still stands today, even through the Japanese attack of this island.

Dutch Harbor/Unalaska economic base is the commercial fishing industry. Dutch Harbor processes millions of pounds of fish and sea food. Like ninety percent of jobs, all depend on commercial fishing in some way. Dutch Harbor is known for being the biggest commercial fishing port in the United States. It services over 600 vessels.
