Whittier is a very small community seventy-five miles southwest of Anchorage on the beginning of the Kenai Peninsula. There is a tunnel from the Seward Highway to Whittier because there is a big mountain between the two. In the summer of 2000 the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel was made into a car-railroad tunnel after being a railroad tunnel since at least 1980. Whittier was established as a military facility during World War Two. Now the two buildings, the Hodge Building and the Buckner Building, house the residents of the 289 person community. The Hodge Building housed Army men and their families during World War Two with one hundred ninety-eight apartments. The Buckner Building was once the largest building in Alaska with one thousand apartments, a hospital, theater, swimming pool, gym, and shops with the reputation of being the "city under one roof."

There are three TV stations in Whittier: ARCS, KUAC, KYAC, and one radio station: KCHU-AM. The community gets their electricity from Chugach Electric Association. The phone company for in state that serves Whittier would be the Yukon Telephone Company, and AT&T Alascom serves as out-of-state. There is a city police called City Public Safety Department. The local fire department is volunteer people. There is no airline that comes into Whittier and there are no taxis except for waterways. There is no court, community hall, or senior services either. Whittier is a port for fishermen and other supplies. One of the benefits of fishing in Whittier is that has an ice-free port.

Tourism

Whittier has only two inns and one bed and breakfast. Although there is plenty to do you can do it all in two or three days. Some of the stuff you can do would be hiking, fishing, the Whittier Historical and Fine Arts Museum, the Salmon Run, Blackstone Glacier, kayaking and scuba diving.

The 1964 Earthquake

The 1964 earthquake had a major effect on the city, 13 people out of 70 people were lost during the earthquake, but only one body was found while the others were presumed dead The earthquake damaged the port facilities which made it harder for the State becuase Whittier was a major Alaskan port.
