Stampeders in the late 1890's reached gold in the Klondike by four main routes. Two of the routes were the Chilkoot Trail and the White Pass Trail. Because of the railway being created the two trails were not used anymore. Michael J. Heney was the construction supervisor for the building of the railway. Three companies joined together to create the White Pass and Yukon Railway. One company in the United States, one in British Colombia, and one in the Yukon. The railway ran to the top of White Pass at a height of 2,885 feet. A total of about 120 miles of track are in the whole railway, about 20 miles of track in Alaska, 42 miles in British Colombia, and 58 miles in the Yukon Territory.
