INTRODUCTION

The Sisters of Providence first stepped on Alaska's shores in June of 1902. They came from their headquarters in Montreal to tend to the sick and help the poor. These women were adorned in black robes, habits, and crosses, arriving with no thought but to aid their fellow kind in their period of hardship, for they were the daughters of God.

These sisters established the Holy Cross Hospital and in 1904 made a school. In 1910 they purchased the Saint Joseph's Hospital in Fairbanks. It wasn't until 1962 that they established Providence Hospital, near the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Today it is known as Providence Alaska Medical Center.

Providence Hospital has a major treatment section for frostbite and burns. In Alaska, overexposure to the cold is a common thing that happens, so this is quite essential to the hospital. People are always being flown in to this hospital because it has such a good treatment section. These sisters accomplished much on this journey to Alaska, and though their bodies may be dead, their spirits will always be watching over us, protecting and helping us.
