Characteristics

The Bengal tiger has many characteristics. One of which is its stripes. All tigers are known for their striped layers of fur. The tiger is a nocturnal animal, which means it hunts during the night. The Bengal tiger is a big hunter, too. It mostly hunts wild boars, water buffaloes, deer, and monkeys but, it also can hunt animals much bigger than themselves.

The tiger also moves differently. When it walks, it stealthily moves through the tall grass after it's prey. The reason that the tiger can move so stealthily is because if its whiskers fit through the tall grass, its body fits too. When the tiger is walking just regularly, it slowly walks around its territory. But, when the tiger is about to go into the water to drink or bathe, it walks backwards into the water to watch for predators.

The tigers usually travel in groups of 3 or 4. The litter is around 1 to 4 cubs. Their eyes open 15 to 16 days after they are born. The mother of her cubs are very protective. They will attack anything that comes near them. The new males who come in the group might eat some of the cubs.

The cubs depend on their mother to get the food until they are old enough to hunt for themselves. Bengal tigers usually live until they are 26 years old. Once they reach up to a certain age, most of their teeth fall out. That's why the tigers attack humans and cattle, because they're usually defenseless. They will also attack if they have disease and they are weak.
