Pandas are found in a small area in the continent of Asia. They date back to about three million years ago. The ancient Chinese history and writings mention the Panda bears. Long ago Chinese emperors kept the Panda bears as pets and for their very valuable furs. They carried a mystery and were believed to be able to keep evil spirits and natural disasters away. There have also been Panda fossils found in present day Burma, Vietnam, and Xian.
In the year of 1957 a man from Kenya attempted to trade a wide selection of African mammals to China for a giant Panda. One year later China finally gave up a giant Panda. This Panda's name was Chi-Chi. Unfortunately Chi-Chi never mated because the United states had broken relations with China. Since Chi-Chi never mated, she never made young Pandas. Chi-Chi eventually died. Years later the relations of the United States and China improved, China then sent two giant Pandas as gifts to America. There they lived in captivity. The two Pandas mated and had offspring. After this, people fell in love with the Panda and now it is the most loved bear around. The many names of the Panda are: cat-bear, speckled bear, banded bear, monk-among-bear, and great bear-cat.
