There are two kinds of pandas, Red Pandas and Giant pandas. The one panda that is usually put in zoos for breeding is the Giant Panda. Why do they want them? The reason: the Giant Panda is an endangered species (which means it is nearly extinct). There are only about 1,000 Giant pandas left in the world.

Several attempts of breeding pandas have been tried. One attempt was when China sent two Giant Pandas, Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling were sent to the United States for breeding. The attempt did not fail, yet it did not succeed. All of Ling-Ling's cubs died.

Places in China have tried to breed pandas as well. In Wolong, China, a research center studies Giant pandas as well as trying to breed them. The Center is called China Research and Conservation Center for Giant Pandas. Another city in city in China, Chengdu, has a research center named Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base.
