One of the reasons there is such a problem is the belief that couples need more children to take care of them. A lot of people in India are farmers and farmers need children to do work. The more children they have, the less work each child has to do, so it is better to have more children. Also, girls are married a couple of years after they have their period wich can be between the ages of 9-16 so girls are having children very early on, so there are more kids.
