NANCY O. AUSTIN

Nancy was born on April,10 1924 (an Aries). Before she was born, her father went into the Navy at the age of sixteen. After she was born, her father and his family lived on a farm in Poinarina, California during the depression. They knew what it was like to go hungry. Her father sent her and her two brothers to school on 50 dollars a month.

In 1951 she moved to Alaska after her divorce from her first husband, Pat. She moved here with a friend. She found a job being a telephone operator within three days of her arrival in Anchorage. Shortly after she found a small shack to live in. During the cold winter of 1952, she moved to Tacoma and shortly after married Ed. She had her first child, Jeff, while Ed was doing road construction. Every day she brought water up from the Tacoma River to wash clothes and cook food.

In 1960 she gave birth to her second child, Kathi. In 1964 she moved to Hope. When the earthquake struck, the land under her house sank, and the state forced them to evacuate and move to higher ground. After the earthquake, the state moved their house and gave them a new lot of land.
