Career
Betty went
to St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She also went to
University of Washington to advance her nursing training. She was 27
when she moved to Alaska and she assisted her husband in teaching
primary school in Ekwok, on the Nushagak river. She also lived in
Kenya for 2 years and directed plays as a Drama teacher to elementary
students.
During the
war, nurses were in high demand. Lucky for Betty that was her choice
of career. She received a one year scholarship for nursing, but she
was too young so she never actually served in the war.
How ironic
it is that Betty Anne used to work at the Pioneer Home for 8 years
and now she's been living there for a year! She always used to tell
people that she would work until she had to work there and there she
is, still volunteering when ever she can.
