Southsider August, 2009

I hope everyone has been enjoying our great summer weather and is now gearing up for the new school year. Registration is the week of August 3 and school begins for students on August 19. This newsletter will provide essential information regarding registration and other events, so please take the time to read through it carefully.

First we have an important correction to make. The correct days and times for registration are posted below and elsewhere in this newsletter. We originally sent out incorrect times.

Also regarding registration, if you have not yet gotten your Zangle Contact and Student Information Form filled out and returned to us, it will help expedite the registration of your child if you have that form filled out when you come.  You can find it at the following link: http://www.asdk12.org/forms/uploads/Student_contact_information.pdf.

Before classes begin we have several fall sports competitions taking place.  Football, Flag Football, Cross-country Running, and Swimming/Diving all have contests in the next two weeks. Whether you are a returning family or new to Service High, we’d love to have you out to the games. Please check either the ASD website or our Service High homepage for dates and times. Our website address is http://www.asdk12.org/schools/service/pages/ .

There are two administrative changes this year. John Gaskins moves from the Freshmen Academy to Activities. John replaces Craig Walker who is returning to West High School this year. Those of you who know or have worked with Craig know how efficient, knowledgeable, and hard working he is.  We certainly will miss him, however, John is an excellent person to follow Craig.  He is equally hard working and will tackle the learning curve in short order.  Replacing John in the Freshmen Academy is Glenn Blake who comes over from West. Glenn has nearly twenty years experience in public education in a variety of settings and he is a welcome addition to our administrative team.

For your calendars, please mark September 16th for our Back to School Open House. The evening begins with a PTSA general membership meeting at six o’clock, followed by an all school meeting in the gymnasium and a chance to briefly visit each of your child’s classes and meet their teachers. I hope everyone can attend and help get the school year started off strong.

Please feel free to contact me or our staff at any time. We are proud of our reputation as a welcoming school with open lines of communication and are determined to keep it.
