Ken Spring Mountain Intensive May Ô08 Grades 7-12
If the idea of having a springtime relationship with nature is your idea of fun, then the Spring Mountain Intensive is for you. This class will deal with the basics of backpacking and wilderness travel. WeÕll spend the first two days discussing appropriate gear, food, first aid, and map reading. Students MUST have appropriate gear for this class, especially footwear. Well fitting boots are a must and should be purchased prior to the class in time to be broken in for the trips. Not doing so is likely to result in painful blisters. Students are required to provide their own gear and food. Much of the gear may be borrowed or rented from REI or AMH. Food may be purchased almost anywhere, but weight concerns will guide your decisions. Beyond the gear issues, with some luck, weÕll have good weather for our multi-day trips up Eagle Rive Valley and the Resurrection Trail on the Kenai Peninsula. As always, what we are able to do will be determined by the weather. This intensive is early enough that it may limit our trail options because of snow cover at lower elevations. Nights are also likely to be cool with temperatures that may drop below freezing, so you will need a sleeping bag rated to +20 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer and a sleeping pad (no air mattress). Other than gear, you will need to be in good hiking condition; so walking some distance (1to 2 miles daily) in the weeks leading up to the intensive would be a good idea. It is not likely that weÕll see any wildlife close up, because of the size of our group, but having a pair of binoculars is always handy for viewing things at a distance. Beyond this, the wilds of Alaska always provide some of the most spectacular viewing in the world and should provide us with plenty of breathtaking moments that you will be able to capture on camera, should you choose to bring one. One final note; we will need at least one chaperone on each of the trips and may need more than one to help with the driving to and from trail heads, so if your parents can help with either the driving, chaperoning, or both please have them contact Ken at Steller. The following is the itinerary for the intensive. May 5-6 Classroom and Day hikes May 7-9 Backpack the Eagle River Valley Trail (20 miles round trip) May 10-11 Weekend off May 12-15 Backpack the Resurrection Trail (22 miles), return to Anchorage
Below is a list suggested equipment for the trip. Some of the larger items, such as tents, stove, and cooking equipment may be shared with other students.

May Intensive Grade Level: Spanish 3+
Spain, here we come! Students will engage in a semester-long, quarter credit class that will prepare them for an in-depth understanding of the historic sites, cities, cultural differences and people they will encounter during our 15 day intensive.
Students will prepare Podcasts on a chosen landmark of historical or contemporary significance in one of the cities we will visit that will serve as a Òguided tourÓ of that site. Upon arrival in Spain, that student will act as Tour Guide for our group. Students will study the geography, culture and history of Spain prior to our trip. We will meet every Friday at lunch to assess progress and assign tasks to be completed by the student in the interim week.
After a 7 day tour together in Spain, students will be assigned host families in the area of Crdoba for 6 nights. One student per family is the norm. During that time they will journal about their experiences, attend school and present on Anchorage to an English class, and complete various tasks assigned.

Troy Troy's Intensive Course Description
Frolf Intensive Grade Level: 7-12 Course Length: 2 weeks Participants will need to bring their own frolf discs. The minimum would be a driver and a putter. If you do not already own your own frolf discs it would probably cost you about $20.00 to purchase some discs. I am also open to discussion on traveling to the courses by bicycle. Frolf is an inexpensive sport that students can enjoy for a lifetime. It involves long walks while keeping your mind engaged on the activity. You get to enjoy the outdoors and at the same time lively interaction with friends while developing a skill that will always need more fine-tuning. You can always work towards a personal best. Participants will be given instruction on several ways to throw the discs and will practice through active participation in the game. There will be field trips to the Lagoon course and also to the Kinkade course. I will need parent volunteers to assist in the transportation of students and also to help with the supervision on the course. Credit Count: P.E.
