Dear Turnagain Families:

Turnagain Elementary School’s PTA is sponsoring its Fourth Annual Read-A-Thon: “Turnagain Tigers Read to Succeed.”  All monies raised in this event will go to Turnagain’s Library for new fiction and non-fiction English and Russian books.  In 2008, our students read 195,000 pages in 29 days and raised $7,400 for new books!  The Read-A-Thon will begin on Sunday, February 1st and end on Friday, February 27th.  We will have an assembly on Monday, March 2nd to recognize the top 3 readers and the top 3 fundraisers.  We will be awarding certificates signed by ASD Superintendent Carol Comeau for all who read 1,000 or more pages. Superintendent Carol Comeau is anticipated to be in attendance at this assembly to personally hand out the certificates.  Prizes will be awarded for the class that reads the most pages, the top fundraising class, and the class with the highest participation level.  We will also have weekly prizes for the top reader in each class.

“In the information age, the key to economic and political achievement is the ability to gain new knowledge rapidly through reading and listening.  … Students’ scores in reading comprehension are consistently associated with their subsequent school grades and their later economic success.”  E.D. Hirsch, Jr., The Knowledge Deficit 2 (2006).

Qualifying pages include books/magazines/newspapers in any language, both read by or to the students, at home and in school.  We all want our children reading and to enjoy reading.  This is a G-R-REAT opportunity to promote reading!  Encouraging reading is our primary goal.  Fundraising is optional.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Sullivan, Turnagain Librarian,    Mr. Ron Lee, Turnagain Parent,

Mrs. Bonnie Paskvan, Turnagain PTA President,    Mrs. Erica Roy, Turnagain Parent/MIR Past President
