Upcoming Events:

   üMulticultural Nightý

Turnagain Elementary blossoms with students and families from all over the world! Multicultural Night is one of our community’s most favored event that includes diverse, tasty dishes, unique entertainment from all over the world, and the chance to meet the interesting people in your neighborhood and community.

Marya Abramczyk , Multicultural Night chairperson, formed a dazzling event last year and  this year will be even more exciting!

Such an event takes hard work, so volunteers would be greatly appreciated!

Please consider just a few hours of your time in making this a night your kids won’t soon forget.

Please email us at tiger_pta@yahoo.com or drop a note in the PTA basket if you are willing to help out. Suggestions and ideas are welcome too!

Let’s show the community how unique and committed we are to our Turnagain Tigers!

GPresidents DayG

Presidents' Day is celebrated in February to honor two of our greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

"If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business. I do the very best I know how - the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what's said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference." ~ Abraham Lincoln

"We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dearly bought experience." ~ George Washington

America's presidents have represented many states, held different occupations and faced difficult challenges. However, each president answered the same call--the call to serve the American people. As you think about past presidents, think about ways you can serve your neighbor, community or country today.

Why would you want to be President?

What are some ways you can serve your neighbor, community or country today?

Spotlight On...U

She may be simply known as "the lunch lady" to many of the younger ones, but to us she is so much more. Barbara Bridges has worked for six years at Turnagain and has been actively involved for over 18 years with her own children and family members attending Turnagain Elementary throughout the years. Born in Misawa Japan and having a father  in the AirForce, Barbara moved around many times and ended up attending 15 different schools in just 13 years!

Barbara has lived in Alaska for a combined total of 30 years and says her reasons for staying at Turnagain are for "the staff and kids". An avid hockey and football fan, Barbara enjoys spending time with her family, especially her first grandchild who was born on January 2, 2006.

Those who are fortunate to work with her describe her as loyal, hard-working and dedicated to the students. She believes no child should go hungry and makes sure every child gets a hot, nourishing meal during lunchtime.

We hope the next visit you make to Turnagain allows you to stop by the kitchen and thank Barbara for all her hard work and loving attention she shows our children. She's an asset that makes us proud to have her  at Turnagain Elementary!

The LunchBox ä

Sweetheart Brownies

You're sure to earn brownie points with your valentines if you whip up a batch of these heart-shaped treats.

INGREDIENTS:

36 2-inch graham crackers

1 14-oz. can sweetened condensed milk (don't use evaporated milk)

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1/4 tsp. salt

1 6-oz. pkg. semisweet chocolate morsels

3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (325 degrees for glassware). While you generously grease an 8-inch square baking pan, put your kids to work crushing the graham crackers into fine crumbs. It's especially easy and fun if you seal the crackers in a plastic bag and then use a rolling pin.

2. Next, stir together the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the chocolate morsels, pecans and graham cracker crumbs and mix with a wooden spoon until well blended.

3. Spoon the batter (it will be very stiff) into the greased pan. Use the back of a wooden spoon (or clean hands) to pat the batter into an even layer. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool completely in the pan.

4. Finally, use a cookie cutter or a butter knife to cut out small--these brownies are rich!--heart shapes. Serve plain,  with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or raspberry sherbert. Makes 8 to 12 servings.
