NHS Update: Live Eagle visits West!

Eligibility:

Students become eligible for the National Honor Society when they have been active at West for at least one semester, have sophomore standing and a cumulative GPA of 3.30.

After first semester grades are posted, the NHS advisor will determine who is eligible for the National Honor Society based on a printout of grades from the registrar. Those newly eligible students will receive an intent-to-join form. These forms are given to teachers to pass out to students, usually the first part of February.

After the intent-to-join forms are turned in, students' names are placed on a faculty evaluation form for faculty input. Students who do not turn in the intent-to-join forms by the deadline will not be eligible to join NHS that year. The faculty evaluation form is for teachers, counselors and administrators to provide input regarding students' character, leadership and service. The faculty evaluation forms are reviewed by the faculty committee, a group of five teachers appointed by the principal. After input and review, the students invited to join the National Honor Society are sent congratulatory letters with the date of their induction ceremony.

National Honor Society Requirements:

NHS members are required to attend bimonthly meetings.

NHS members will maintain high standards of excellence in scholarship, leadership, character and service.

Members of the National Honor Society are required to earn ten (10) hours of service in a community volunteer position and (10) ten hours of NHS volunteer time for every year that they are a member of the honor society.  They will earn the right to wear a National Honor Society stole at graduation upon completion of their hours by April 15th of their graduating year.

Dismissal:

Members who miss two general membership meetings will be issued a warning. Members who miss three or more general membership meetings without being excused may be dismissed.

Members who fall below a 3.0 GPA for one semester will be placed on academic probation. Members who fall below a 3.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters shall be dismissed.

Members who, in the opinion of the faculty counsel, fall below the standard for character shall be

a. placed on probation for the first offense;

b. dismissed for the second offense;

c. in the case of a flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, may be dismissed for the first offense.

Members who fail to earn the required service hours will not be eligible to wear the NHS stole at graduation or receive the NHS seal on their diploma.
