Tyson Elementary’s bilingual program named best in Alaska!

The Alaska Association for Bilingual Education has named William Tyson Elementary School as the Outstanding Bilingual Education Program of the Year. The association will formally recognize Tyson Elementary during the State Bilingual Conference luncheon in Anchorage on February 4th, 2000, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton.

Tyson Elementary met the association’s qualification criteria in the following areas:

  • Attainment of English language proficiency and academic achievement
  • Strong comprehensive program that includes English language development, primary language support, and specifically designated academic instruction in English
  • Consistent and continuous program of instruction in kindergarten through sixth grade
  • Effective parent involvement, and leadership development for parents of English learners

"Our school staff and students are very proud and excited about receiving recognition for what we believe is quickly becoming the best of all possible worlds," said school principal John Kito. "We are blessed with a multilingual student population that consists of over 18 separate languages. Our staff designed a bilingual program that was awarded a federal Title VII grant and is now in its second year of implementation. One of our most innovative pieces is the creation of Dual Language Partnerships with our Tyson parents in order to preserve, maintain and enrich primary languages. It is working."
