Daniel and Nicole

Hi my name is Nicole Joe. I interviewed my dad. I asked him questions because I wanted to know more about his culture. His name is Daniel Ellanak and he is Aleut. After asking him my questions this is the information that I learned.

He was born in Karluk, Alaska in 1947. Karluk is on Kodiak Island. What it was like then is nothing like what it is today. The village site where he was born, was abandoned. The village had about 150 people.

They didn't have running water or electricity. They had wood burning stoves. They didn't have to worry about wood because they lived on Shelikof Strait. This is an area where you would find driftwood. So they had more driftwood than the village needed.

Karluk still has one of the largest Red salmon and King salmon runs in the world. In the summer time, before everything was washed away by the tide and waves, people came from Seattle to fish and work in the canneries.

I really enjoyed asking my dad these questions. I want to thank my dad for teaching me some new things about the Aleut culture.
