Statues on display at William Tyson Elementary
Poleta, Grade 6
February 13, 1998
Larry was originally from Barrow, Alaska. He spent part of his life in Anchorage and part in Barrow. After graduating from West High School, he later went to several art schools. One in the South West, Santa Fe, New Mexico. He then went to New York City and graduated from the Rhode Island Art School. He has been working in the art field after graduating for about twenty some years.
He is an Inupiaq from Barrow. His mother is originally from White Hope which is on the Arctic Slope.
He tries to show the people and their clothing in his artwork. He also tries to show their different ceremonies and the animals within the environment.
He feels that his greatest accomplishments are putting his artwork in public places. It is very important to him and recently he has put one of his art pieces in William Tyson Elementary. It was a highlight for him, having not worked with aluminum before. To see something put outdoors is new, having most of his pieces indoors. He has also put a recent piece in the Birch Museum at the University of Washington.
He blows glass and he enjoys casting glass . He finds a commercial studio and rents the space. He is always helped by others in the studio. They help blow containers like goblets, not exactly goblets, more like vases. He mostly produces large containers.
What he feels he gets from his work is the satisfaction of accomplishing his art. He likes using his hands and makes most of his art by hand. He has been working with his hands ever since he was a kid. He also appreciates it when people enjoy his artwork.
He is in a drumming and singing group and has met William Tyson. That is part of the reason he made the art for our school the way he did. There are two dancers on the sides of the drummer.

The above art piece was done by cutting the aluminum with water jets by a company in Seattle,Washington. He then bolted a drum to the drummer later after the interview.
