This is our principal, Mr. Kito. He is a member of the Tlingit tribe. He is a part of the Raven Clan. This is his button vest. His mother made this vest. It took her a long time to make the vest. They use them for special ceremonies. He has not used this vest for ceremonies yet.

Chilkat blankets such as this were made from mountain goat wool and cedar bark and required about a year to weave. Traditional colors were black white yellow, and blue. Cedar bark made the chilkat blankets tough.

Button blankets were dance blankets. They were made out of white trader's wool often red, navy blue, or black. The buttons were sewn in a pattern of their clan animal. The buttons they used were mother of pearl.
