Invitation
What do students know about numbers? How can they represent numbers that they already know?
Students in first and second grade are expanding their knowledge of what numbers mean to them. In this lesson, students will explore number concepts and represent their knowledge through the use of pictures and words.
Tasks
-review numbers 1-100
-play Number-Line Squeeze Game
-use Kid Pix Studio to draw a picture which represents numbers in some way
-use Kid Pix Studio to write a few sentences which tell how their picture incorporates numbers
Tools
-Power Macintosh Computers with Kid Pix Studio program available
-number line
-2 rulers
-paper and pencils
-counting chart (1 - 100)
-Everyday Mathematics Teacher's Manual-First Grade
Standards
Math A1-understand and use numeration, including numbers, number
systems, and counting numbers.
C1-express and represent mathematical ideas using oral and
written presentations
C2-relate mathematical terms to everyday language
Lesson Plan Format
A. Write the following math message on the board:
Fill in the blanks:
12, __, __, 15, __
25, 26, __, __, __
37, __, 39, __, __
B. Encourage students to use a counting chart or the number line to assist
them.
C. Check work.
D. Play Number-Line Squeeze Game (see page 14 of the teacher's manual
for Everyday Mathematics-First Grade).
E. Have students brainstorm where they see numbers in this classroom,
in the school, at home, etc.(such as clocks, road signs, charts, menus)
Next, talk about how pictures can represent
numbers even if they don't have numbers in them (such a candles on a
birthday cake).
F. Have students pair up and work together on a picture that incorporates
numbers, or concepts of numbers. The students will draw their picture
on Kid Pix Studio. Make sure they leave room to write sentences
somewhere on their picture.
G. Students will together write 1-2 sentences on their picture by clicking on
the typewriter. The sentences will tell how their picture incorporates
numbers.
Assessment
-Students must complete a picture which involves numbers in some way.
-Students must write 1-2 sentences explaining how their picture
incorporates numbers.
