Invitation
How can students understand addition story problems? What tools can make it easier for them to design their own addition story problems and then explain it to others?
Students in second grade are learning about addition story problems. Some students have difficulty understanding them and don't like to do them. This lesson should entice students to work on story problems and solve them.
Tasks
-solve addition math message
-make up addition stories orally and draw it on the board
-write number sentences to go with their picture
-draw a picture on Kid Pix Studio and write a number sentence that goes with their picture.
Tools
-Power Macintosh Computers with Kid Pix Studio program available
-Dry Erase board and markers (or chalk board w/ chalk)

Lesson Plan Format
A. Write the following problems on the board for students to solve:
3 + 2 = ___
5 + 9 = ___
2 + 1 = ___
7 + 4 = ___
8 + 7 = ___
B. Check Work
C. Make up a story that involves the number sentence 3 + 2 = 5
Example: One day 3 bears went swimming in the lake.
Soon 2 more bears come swimming. How many bears
are swimming altogether?
Encourage students to come up with more stories on their own.
Draw them on the board and then write the number sentence
that goes with them.
D. Have students draw a picture that involves addition in some way in Kid Pix Studio. After they are done drawing and coloring it,
have them write a number sentence under it.
E. Print Work
Assessment
-Students must complete a picture and a number sentence that tells about the picture. Students must also verbally explain their picture and sentence to the teacher.
