William Tyson Elementary School, Anchorage, Alaska, is using the Success for All © reading program. The Success for All curriculum is based on current research on the ways children learn to read and write. Developed by Johns Hopkins University, it is a proven program used in over 1500 schools. At the heart of the program is 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction every school day. Beginning in first grade, children are grouped across classes and grades by reading level. This makes it possible for each child to receive intense instruction on his or her current reading level. Children's reading level is assessed in September for initial placement and then every eight weeks to ensure that adequate progress is being made. The emphasis is on prevention and early intervention to help each child become a successful reader and student. The first grade through sixth grade classes are called Reading Roots and Reading Wings. Tutoring, cooperative learning, and family support are other important elements of the program. The kindergartners also participate in the Early Learning Program which emphasizes oral language development and readiness. William Tyson staff enjoy working with our students to assure SUCCESS FOR ALL! How can parents/grandparents help? Research shows that children who read most read best. We ask that every child read at least twenty minutes every night. |
