The Great Sink Hole
There came a time when Kansas
country went through a horrible drought. 16,000 cows were dying
of dehydration. Mayor Kansas was at his wit's end. He didn't know
what to do. Often he turned his rage on his wife. One night Mrs.
Kansas had an idea.
"Well, sir. Why don't you ask Tina Tally. She's new in
this country, and I hear she can solve anything. She's the roughest
teacher in the west and the wildest too."
"Well misses, you've served me well that's exactly what
I'll do."
So Mayor Kansas set off for the Northern Lands as they call
it to see if she'd help him.
As he walked along he saw in the distance a huge building.
As he got closer he realized it was a giant school house.
When he stepped in side he knew why it was so big. Inside
was the biggest lady he'd seen in his life. (And that's quite
a number of years.) She was 7ft tall, 9ft wide, 600 pounds, bald
as an egg, with horrible shiny
black lipstick. He was so shocked he immediately sat right down.
The teacher yelled at a student to introduce her. The student
got up and began in a chant...
"The lady you see before you is Tina Tally. Her head
reflects the sun rays. She grows one hair 5ft thick,16ft tall
every seven years. It is the seventh year. You are privileged
to see her hair."
With that the student sat down. Suddenly it hit the mayor.
This was the person he was looking for. He immediently dropped
on his knees and began to speak.
"I consider myself most privileged to have met you in
your seventh year. I am Mayor Kansas and have come to ask your
help for the cows of Kansas. They are dying of thirst as we are
having a drought.
There is no water to appease their thirst. I beg you to help us.
Tina Tally thought. After a long while she said she'd see
what she could do.
Mayor Kansas left satisfied. He knew the problem was in good
smart hands. He had complete confidence in Tina Tally.
Tina shut herself into her private study and began to think.
After 48 hours in seclusion she had a brilliant idea. She
jumped up and hit her head on the ceiling.
She immediately called her students and told them to carry
her to the Great Kansas Desert.
They heaved and hoed and finally got her to the middle of
the desert. Then they set her down, "plunk".
Tina told them to "scatter back home". She began
her preparations.
Several hours later she had finished. She called some reporters
to take note of what she did. Then she waited.
When it struck midnight, she began her climb. She began to
climb up her hair. Slowly, inch by inch.
When she reached the top it was 5 minutes to 12:00. She steadied
herself, then jumped. It took her 5 minutes to reach the ground.
At exactly 12:00 Tina Tally hit the ground. She created a
hole 20ft deep and 16ft wide.
When she hit the ground it made the heavens rumble like thunder.
It poured with rain for 16 days afterwards.
The great hole Tina Tally made filled up with water and became
what Kansans know today as the Great Sink Hole.
Tina Tally, of course, was not forgotten. A bronze statue
commemorating her can be found on the south side of the hole.
