A Neighborhood School

Willow Crest Elementary School is a neighborhood school that provides a complete Kindergarten through Sixth Grade program serving the central Spenard and Windemere sections of Anchorage, Alaska.

Willow Crest serves approximately 525 students. We will have three kindergarten teachers in a Full Day Kindergarten program beginning with the 99-00 school year. In addition to our 3 Kindergarten teachers, we will have 19 1st through 6th grade classroom teachers. We also have Art, P.E. and Music instructors, as well as a Librarian to support a well-rounded regular education program for all of our students.

To support the individual learning needs of all students at Willow Crest, we have staff to meet Special Education needs, a Bilingual Learning Center, and Title I staff that focus on reading, language arts, math, and technology instruction .

Willow Crest offers a comprehensive educational program designed to meet the individual academic needs of students, as well as foster the social-emotional development of each child. There is a strong working relationship with the Willow Crest PTA, parents, and community.

Comprehensive Model of Teaching Strategies

Willow Crest already is implementing research-based models in its school-wide reform efforts. These include Everyday Mathematics, Kagan's Cooperative Learning, and Project Achieve. Everyday Math addresses student needs in the area of math, Kagan's Cooperative Learning addresses all areas of learning and social skill development, and Project Achieve addresses school climate. First Steps was selected by Willow Crest to address student's needs in the area of literacy. First Steps will be implemented in the 1999-00 school year. All models are developmentally appropriate, have strong parent components, are aligned with each other in terms of meeting students' needs, and use cooperative learning strategies.
