Welcome to our classroom!
Literacy: During the day students having time to read independently, aloud, in small groups, and whole class. Students read and write across the curriculum, in all subject areas including math. We perform readers' theaters for audiences of our reading buddies, parents, and peers. To view our class during during literacy times, click below:
Math: My math program is Everyday Mathematics supplemented with hands on manipulatives and Opening Eyes to Math. Visualizing math is an important step towards becoming proficient in math for life.
I am using the 4th grade curriculum for social studies, health, and science.
Social Studies: In Social Studies we are studying ancient civilizations, including ancient Egypt, early explorers, and the colonization of North America. The kick off for our Ancient Egypt unit is a field trip to the Anchorage Center for Performing Arts to watch the IMAC film "Mysteries of Egypt".
Health: In Health we are using The Great Body Shop for our curriculum. Students study various aspects of healthy living, including: community safety, teeth, hearing, digestive system, exercise, no smoking, and staying drug free.
Science: This year we are studying systems in science, which includes learning about the skeleton and bones, the dynamic earth, and variables such as pulleys and ramps. As part of the skeletons unit, we defleshed a raven and necropsied salmon carcasses. My class also is rearing coho salmon in a refrigerated fish tank in the library, courtesy of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
