RAVEN NECROPSY
Joan Dale came to our classroom to teach us about the anatomy and structure of a raven. Ms. Fried had found the dead raven near her home. It had fallen head first into a deep pile of snow one night during a high wind advisory.

Ms. Dale measured the wing span of the raven, removed the feathers, and showed the various internal organs to the students. She then brought the raven to her home where she boiled it to soften the flesh. Students then had the opportunity to deflesh the raven meat from the bones. When they were all done, we had a complete raven skeleton for the classroom. Students discovered that the raven had died from a broken neck. |
What students wrote about the Raven Necropsy:
The raven necrospy was really interesting because Ms. Dale came in and taught us about the raven that Ms. Fried found in her front yard after a really bad storm by a pole. We found out how it die. It died from breaking its neck on the pole. Ouch!! We got to take the heart, the throat, the liver, the lungs, and even all the bones!! We cleaned the bones. We even took the brain out!!
The raven necropsy wasn't really fine for me and I didn't really want to see it because it reminded me of my bird when it died.
The raven's beak peeled off easily. They cut open the raven and took out the heart. His neck was twisted. They plucked the raven feathers and his wing span was long. The raven spit up and we looked at all the bones, big and small. One of the raven's eyes was out of its socket and part of the brain was still in the skull.
When we did the raven dissection some people got sick but I didn't. It stunk in our class when we were done.
Some people put plastic gloves on and touched the heart, liver, intestines. Some people didn't touch it because they felt funny.
This is what happened: William's mom came in and we measured the wing span. We cut the raven open and it was gross and I got sick.
I liked the raven necrospy because it was exciting and very interesting.
