WELCOME TO THE FIFTH GRADE
Mrs. Hoyer's Web Page
I teach fifth grade at Willow Crest Elementary
School in Anchorage, Alaska. I currently have 29 students in my
class. My class is composed of children from many ethnic backgrounds.
We study seven academic subjects, art, music, and physical education.
In science we are studying how energy flows.
We have studied, levers and pulleys, circuits and pathways, and
for the last quarter of the school year we will focus on food
chemistry. In social studies our class just finished Chapter 15,
America on the Move and we are currently studying Chapter 16,
A Divided Country, which is about the Civil War. In reading the
unit that we are studying is, Understanding Self and Others. My
reading program is enhanced by studying various aspects of literature
including, poetry, realistic fiction, fantasy, informational,
biography, and historical fiction. I also encourage my students
to acquaint themselves with Newbery authors as well as Young Reader's
Choice authors. In health, we are studying the curriculum of The
Great Body Shop. Our focus is on "You Are What You Eat".

Our language curriculum exposes my students
to the writing process as well as grammar and language mechanics.
Uniquely, our spelling is committed to teaching spelling as a
language process. Students exercise, integrate, and expand their
reading, thinking, and writing as they learn to spell. Our math
adoption is Everyday Math. We are currently learning how to add.
subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. We will then focus on
decimals and geometry to finish the school year.
