If this is the first 3D image you've made you might  want to first try to make a 3D box first.

First start up a paint program such as super paint or claris works using the paint module.

Select the text tool.  In most programs it looks like an "A"  Drag an area to type a larg letter in.  I use about font size 200 or so.  Before you type your letter though be sure to set the style to outline.  It should look like this.

Next you'll need another letter exactly like the first.  I usually just use the lasso and do a quick copy and paste.  Place the next letter like this:

Next just connect the edges of the letter using a line tool.

Now you'll need to get rid of the extra line made by the D in the back.

Now the difficult part.  Making the inside part of the D.  I usually just copy and paste the part of the inside that I want.  Then position it to look 3D.

Now just erase the extra stuff.  See below

Now just color it in.

You also might want to experiment to see if your painting program lets you transform your letter.
