Start by making a paint document in Apple works or some other paint program.  A paint program has an eraser and a fill bucker.  A draw document does not.

Step 1  Just make a regular ol' box to start with.

Step 2 Now add these little tail thingys on the corner of each box.  Hint:  using the shift key draws a straight line.  Each tail needs to be the same length.  Hint: use copy and paste. Then use the rotate command to rotate it 90 degrees.

Step 3  Now from the end of each tail make a longer tail.  Notice how this tail extends past the ends of the box.

Step 4  Ok so far so good.  Now make a tail in the direction shown at a 45 degree angle.  Hint:  use the shift key when drawing these.

Step 7  Drawn a line from the corners of each box straight over, Making sure the this line intersects with the one we just made.  Look closely before you proceed.

Step 6 Now just erase the part of the line as I did and you are done with the outline.

Step 7  You can color in your box now.  Caution use 4 different colors.

Now copy and paste this over and over again in a new document, and make a tesselation.  For more info on tesselations you can check this out.   Click to see the final product.  Can you make an optical illustion such as this?  Try making one out of a triangle instead of a square.  Or, if you are ready you can try the old lady tesselation.
