CITIZENSHIP CHALLENGE

What makes a good citizen?  The Alaska Content Standards for Government and Citizenship state that, a student should have the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively as an informed and responsible citizen in society.

My challenge to you is to review the following suggestions and select five or more to participate in.  Each of these may be done twice.

 

___   Attend your area Community Council Meeting.  Meeting dates are listed in the

            local paper, cable television, and on the Internet.  Assembly and School

            Board meetings are telecast and rebroadcast on local stations. (5 points)

___   Select an event from the TV news or newspaper and discuss it with your

            family.  Write an opinion paragraph (at least five sentences) expressing your

            ideas.  (5 points)

___   Perform a random act of kindness (1 point) www.actsofkindness.org

___   Participate in a community service activity (2 points)

___   Identify a community public policy problem and research it by gathering

            information, examining solutions, develop your own public policy and

            Develop an action plan.  See me for a Project Citizen booklet. (5 points)

___   Share a homework assignment that you are proud of with your school

            Counselor, Assistant Principal or Principal.  Make an appointment! (1 point)

___   Interview an elected official and get answers to ten questions that you

            prepare.  Please include, “What was your favorite class in school”?  Be sure

            to ask 8th grade questions that do not elicit a “yes” or “no” answer. (5 points)

___   Help your family recycle.  www.alparalaska.com   (1 point)

___   Visit a local park.  If there is any trash, pick up what you can.  (1 point)

___   Select a candidate or elected official and research their stand on an issue.
