Primary Sources
Mencken, H.L. “Among the Believers.” Found in Our
Nation’s Archive: The History of the United States in Documents. New York: Black Dog and
Leventhal, 1999. H.L. Mencken was a
popular columnist in Baltimore
during the 1920s. He wrote this piece as a satirical look at the trial and all
the hoopla that surrounded it.
Secondary Sources
Linder, Douglas
O. State
v. John Scopes (“The Monkey Trial”). 22 January 2008.
This website really focused on the media circus that surrounded the Scopes
Trial. It emphasized that the trial was more about the conflict between social
and intellectual values in our country. I found this very helpful in writing
the section on conflict in my paper.
Muraskin, Roslyn, and Shelly Feuer Domash. Crimes
and the Media: Headlines versus Reality. Upper Saddle River, N.J.:
Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007.
This
book looked at many famous trials and the impact the media has on influencing
the outcome as perceived by the general public. It was great for the compromise
section of my research.
Nardo, Don. The Scopes Trial. San Diego: Lucent Books, 1997. Since this entire book was dedicated to the
Scopes Trial, it provided me with a ton of information and made contributions
to all sections of the paper.
Stonebarger, Bill. The Story of Evolution.
[Videotape.] Madison, WI: Hawkhill Video, 1992. This video really
helped me understand the difference between Creationism and evolution. There
was some information on the Scopes Trial, but it was most background
information.
Tierney,
Kevin. “Scopes Trial.” World Book Online Reference Center.
2008. [Goldenview Library.] 22 Jan. 2008 <http://www.worldbookonline.com/wb/Article?id=ar496380>.
This encyclopedia article helped me formulate my outline. It was short, but it gave
me a number of key words that guided my research.
