Who should join orchestra?
Any student who loves the sound of a stringed instrument; string bass, cello, viola or violin. Every child can learn to play some music, including special needs students.
Why should students study an instrument?
Playing an instrument can give lifelong enjoyment. Learning music can make you smarter in math and language, and teaches cooperative skills. Music makes you smarter.
What is the sixth grade orchestra or band program?
Orchestra or band is a student's first elective. While we hope that all students will choose to play an instrument, this is NOT a required class. Orchestra and band classes meet three times each week during the school day for 45-minute classes. Students do NOT miss any regular classwork. More info: ASD Music Dept.
Does my student need to know how to read music, or how to play an instrument?
No. We start from the very beginning. All are welcome. If someone has played an instrument for several years already, this might be a good year to try a different instrument or to improve their skills in their current one.
Is it expensive to learn to play an instrument?
All of the instrument lessons are free, since the orchestra teacher is part of the school system. If a student took private lessons, it could cost between $15 - $50 for each half-hour lesson. Please do not let money problems stand in your way! We will do our best to find a way for your student to rent an instrument and get the necesary supplies. How does my student sign up for orchestra?
We have a contract for the student and parent / guardian to sign, that gives permission for the student to be in orchestra (or band). This is a one-year committment, since it takes that long for students to give the instrument a chance. Student Contract.
What days are the orchestra classes?
Alpenglow, Eagle River - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
Birchwood, Homestead, Ravenwood - Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
