More Information: Implementing and Documenting Accommodations

Staff in your school may want to use the following checklist when preparing for test day. The planning is done differently depending on how your school and staff are organized. The school principal or Special Education Department Chair will know how this is done in your school. The special education teacher, department chair or other staff should consider the following to be ready for test day:

  • Determine all of the accommodations students will require for testing
  • Determine how many students will need a separate test setting and secure locations for them
  • Determine which students need accommodations given in a one on one basis and secure the personnel needed for these students
  • Communicate with classroom teachers about student accommodations, the plan for providing special education testing accommodations and discuss how to logistically handle test materials during the week.
  • Meet with all support staff involved in providing test accommodations to make sure they understand the nature of the accommodations that will be provided
Things to think about…
  • How will you and the classroom teacher communicate with one another about who will be testing in the special education room and who will be in the general education classroom?
  • How will you handle scheduled breaks for students and bathroom breaks?
  • How will you manage students returning to class when finished?
  • If a student is disruptive during the testing period, what will you do?
  • What will you do if a student needs more time to test and the rest of the students are finished?
  • How will you be sure each student’s accommodations are provided?
