Recaps

  • All students must participate in statewide assessment
  • Assessment options must be documented on the IEP
  • HSGQE stands for High School Graduation Qualifying Examinations
  • Alternative assessments are available for the HSGQE but applications must be approved by the state
  • It’s the special education teacher or department chair’s responsibility to provide statement of verification for accommodations
  • Students on alternate assessment are on a non-diploma track
  • Re-evaluations and entry/exit forms must be submitted in a timely manner
  • An accommodation on the IEP must be practiced over time and provided during assessment
  • Part-time students more than .25 FTE must be assessed and count towards AYP
KNOW the difference between accommodations and modifications!

Getting Started

1. Look for a booklet or download a copy of Participation Guidelines

2. Become familiar with Grade Level Expectations When writing new IEP’s, link IEP goals and
objectives to standards and GLE’s
3. Find out who is responsible for organizing assessment accommodations in your school.
4. Review all your students’ IEP’s.

Regular Assessment

  • Make a list of accommodations found on your students’ IEP’s
  • Provide accommodations or assure accommodations are provided in classrooms

Alternative Assessment to HSGQE

  • Check with Department Chair to see if Alternative Application has been submitted and approved

Alternate Assessment

  • Collect data and evidence on alternate assessments
5. Complete and submit all new IEP’s so they are active during test dates  
6. Become familiar with the format of Alaska’s Statewide Assessments. Review sample test items and rubrics.

  1. Complete the training before following these steps
  2. Log in to your MLP account
  3. Click on the district catalog (upper left column)
  4. Locate  " Special Ed-PD: Statewide Assessment and Students with Disabilities, (date), Online, Self-Paced, 1 hour"
  5. Click once on the title of the training
  6. Click on the "Sign Up Now" button
  7. Click the the "Return" button under the words "You are Enrolled".
  8. Find the "Approved and in Progress" section of your MLP portfolio
  9. Click on the title of this class
  10. Locate the "Actions" section near the bottom of the screen that opens
  11. Click on the link entitled: "IR Special Education Training Evaluation"
  12. Complete the evaluation form and click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the screen.
  13. Click on the "Return to Main Screen" button.
  14. FInd the "Actions" section near the bottom of the screen that opens
  15. Click on "Mark Complete"
  16. Click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the "Activity Completion" page that appears
  17. Click on the "Return to Main" button
  18. You are done. Within a few days the class title will move from "Awaiting Final Approval" to the "Most Recently Completed" section of your MLP portfolio.
