Concept Mapping

These are various methods for drawing connections between related topics to assist students with comprehension and recall.

 

Grammar

This refers to the rules used to determine which form of a word is used as well as the order of words within a sentence.

 

Graphic Organizer

This refers to a process for visually organizing information to assist students in understanding concepts, their interrelationships, and hierarchies. A commonly used, simple version of this is the Venn Diagram. Types of organizers include: webbing, maps, diagrams, outlines, and bubbling, in addition to other techniques.

 

Semantics

This often refers to the structure of speech and the message one relates with its use.

 

Vocabulary

In an educational setting, this refers to the words a student understands and/or uses correctly. New vocabulary is often introduced with each new topic of study.

 

Word Order

Refers to the order in which words are used within a given language. For example, in English we might say, “I read that book,” as opposed to “That book read I.”

 

Word Retrieval

“It’s on the tip of my tongue,” is often stated when one is experiencing difficulty rapidly finding the correct word to use.
