Let students strengths, not struggles, determine the outcome of their workMemoryis required for students when learning and demonstrating new skills. Those experiencing difficulty in this area may have trouble organizing information while trying to recall the rules for writing, such as letter formation, spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, sentence structure, and composition structure. If a student is unable to recall the rules long enough to incorporate them all, writing can be quite difficult. Likewise, it can make it hard for students to remember reading rules, such as phonetics, or to answer comprehension questions and take tests. One strategy for assisting students with concerns in this area is the use of templates structuring what is to be written to help them turn out well-developed assignments. Organized note taking skills can also assist with reading, research, and listening assignments to provide a means for quick information retrieval at a later date. Graphic organizers have been studied for their potential use in helping students arrange information in such a manner that they are later able to recall the facts on their own. Results from this latter source vary, but the variety of options available can be fine-tuned to help meet the needs of each individual struggling with memory concerns. |
