Let students’ strengths, not struggles, determine the outcome of their work

Phonology

or the sounds used in words, can cause difficulty for some students when learning to read or spell. If experiencing problems in this area, students may confuse the sounds, have difficulty sequencing them, not easily hear how words can be broken into smaller sound units, or have problems linking a sound with the symbol representing it. Any of these areas may cause a student to have difficulty decoding unknown words, which can take the focus away from the overall meaning of what they are reading. It can also significantly increase the length of time it takes a student to read a passage.
