Let students strengths, not struggles, determine the outcome of their workWritingThe process of writing involves much more than either penmanship or creative writing alone. Writing requires several areas of the brain and body to work in unison in order to create a well-written product. Much schoolwork requires writing to demonstrate what a student understands about a topic, whether reporting on a book read or results from a science project. It is important to allow all students to clearly demonstrate their knowledge in the area upon which they are being instructed or assessed. If any students have difficulty in one of the major skill areas required for writing, it may be hard to display this knowledge sufficiently through a traditional written project. The students will need to call upon their individual strengths to compensate for their difficulties. Using the computer may also help to do this, but one should always check with the teacher to assure it is acceptable to do so. |
