The ABA wishes to recognize the significant contributions made by Linda Simmons, former ABA Executive Director, who lost her battle with cancer in 2001. The scholarship is offered to provide encouragement and financial assistance to students who have demonstrated (a) an interest in the communications arts and (b) abilities in the areas of academics, performance, attendance and discipline. Applicant must pursue a degree or certificate at a community college, college, or professional trade school, in public relations, journalism advertising, radio and/or television broadcasting. The ATIA scholarship program was established to assist Alaskan students pursuing the education necessary to help them succeed in the travel and tourism industry. Students interested in the tourism industry who meet the following general criteria may apply. (1) Applicant must be enrolled or intending to enroll on a full-time basis (or part-time for the ATIA Graduate and Continuing Education Scholarship) in a program of study in preparation for a career in tourism. For example, the Hotel and Tourism Management program offered at Alaska Pacific University; the Culinary Arts and Hospitality/Restaurant Management programs offered at University of Alaska Anchorage; vocational-technical courses offered at schools such as the Career Academy and Alaska Travel Concepts; and other degree programs, such as business or marketing, with the intent to pursue a career in travel and tourism. DETAILS: Open to graduating high school seniors. The internship program offers young Alaskans the opportunity to assist the Senator and staff members in a variety of ways, such as researching legislative issues, monitoring committee hearings, answering telephones, performing clerical and press office duties, or delivering messages to the Senate floor. There are two high school internship sessions: May 31 to July June 28 and July 5 to August 2. Interns' schedules also include visits to national monuments, landmarks, historic sites, and cultural and sporting events. The Senator's Washington, D.C., office arranges for housing at a reasonable fee, usually on the campus of George Washington University. Applicants must submit a completed application, a cover letter, a one page essay, an official transcript, a resume, and two recommendation letters. AMOUNT: Pays for travel, lodging, and most meals for the duration of the program DETAILS: Open to American Indian and Alaska Native students. The NNAYI is an intense academic enrichment program funded by the Office of Minority Health and the National Institute of Health. The program is designed to prepare American Indian and Alaska Native students for admission to college and professional school, and to encourage them to pursue a career in the areas of health science and biomedical research. NNAYI's curriculum is presented in a series of lectures, interactive workshops, and field trips. Students learn about various health professions, college and medical school admission processes, financial aid resources, and health care issues affecting American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Students will network with American Indian and Alaska Native health professionals and learn about mentoring and shadowing opportunities from physicians who are members of the Association of American Indian Physicians. The program consists of a rigorous schedule of all-day sessions as well as walking long distances. Students must be prepared to work. The program will be held from June 21to June 29. Sixty students (ages 16 to 18) will be selected to attend the NNAYI program in Washington, D.C. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicants will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, demonstrated interest in the fields of health sciences or biomedical research, leadership skills, and personal attributes. Applicants must submit a completed application packet, a one-page personal statement, an official transcript, a recommendation form checklist (included in the packet) a recommendation letter from a counselor or teacher, and a photo for identification purposes. DETAILS: Open to Alaskan senior or Alaskan High School graduate. This scholarship is dedicated in memory of Thomas K. Besh, and will be awarded to applicants who share Thomas's love of skiing and have proven through their various personal and community achievements that they deserve further opportunity to bring out the best in themselves. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher. Applicants must submit a completed application, recommendation letters, a transcript with test scores, a personal essay, and a budget. | DETAILS: Open to graduating high school seniors. One scholarship of $4,000 will be awarded to a senior who is employed in the home building industry in Anchorage or who is the dependent of someone who is employed in the home building industry in Anchorage. The applicant must plan to continue his/her education at a college, university, trade school, or vocational school. The applicant must maintain a minimum of 12 units or be enrolled in a full-time course of study at a trade or vocational school. The applicant must submit a transcript, answer specific questions outlined in the application instructions, and write a narrative describing your career objectives. INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE (IHS) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS |

| Extended to April 28, 2008 | DETAILS: Open to seniors who are U.S. citizens, Alaska Native or American Indian. In the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (Public Law 94-437), Congress and the President of the United States established a national goal "to provide the quantity and quality of health services which will permit the health status of Indians to be raised to the highest possible level." In order to accomplish this goal, Public Law 94-437 authorizes the Indian Health Service (IHS) to conduct scholarship programs to train health professinals necessary to staff IHS health programs serving Indian people. These scholarship programs are the Preparatory Scholarship Program, the Pregraduate Scholarship Program, the Health Professions Scholarship Program and the IHS Extern Program (for college students). Each program has specific requirements. An applicant must meet the specific requirements for the Preparatory, Pregraduate, Health Professions scholarship or the IHS Extern program for which he/she is applying in order to receive consideration. Refer to the description for each scholarship program for specific requirements. Applicants must be US citizens and American Indian or Alaska Native. Complete applications submitted by eligible applicants must include the following: completed application form, two faculty/employer recommendations, documentation of Indian eligibilty, an official transcript, written evidence of acceptance into school, verification of course curriculum, reason for requesting scholarship, delinquent debt form, W-4 form with original signature, outline of course curriculum for your major, and acknowledgement card.
