| DETAILS: The Spirit of Youth campaign salutes Alaskan teens that are making positve contributions in their communities. This recognition campaign includes prestigious state and local awards in addition to media coverage in local newspapers, on radio and television news. Nominees are invited to an annual banquet where they are eligible for cash scholarship awards. Nominations come from school staff and board members, youth clubs and organizations, the business community, or other teenagers. Any community member inspired by a teen's efforts can submit a nomination. Nominations are reviewed at the end of every month. Nomination form is available at www.spiritofyouth.org. |

DETAILS: Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers announced in February 2004 a major new initiative designed to encourage talented students from families of low and moderate income to attend Harvard College. While the new initiative has four major components, including recruitment, admissions, and a summer academic program designed to prepare talented students from financially disadvantage backgrounds for college; the financial aide component increases aid for students from low and moderate-income families. Beginning with the 2004-20054 year, parents in families with incomes of less than $40,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of attending Harvard for their children. In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions expected of families with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000. If you know of a family with an honor student graduating from high soon. DETAILS: This contest is for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, class of 2008-2009. Seven winners will receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to NFWL's fall conference. This year's essay topic deals with the Bill of Rights as shown through prominent women during the American Revolutionary period. This year's essay topic is "The Great Enfranchisement: Women's Suffrage." The applicant must write a 400-600 word essay on how the enfranchisement of American women was achieved from the 1890s to 1920. In addition to the essay, the applicant must submit a completed essay contest verification form to the NFWL office before sending in the essay. Applicant must submit two reference letters and the name of your sponsoring woman legislator. Essay and attachments must be received by August 19, 2008 .
