| DETAILS: Applicant must be a SENIOR with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and/or community; be a US citizen, US National, or US permanent resident; and plan to pursue an undergraduate degree at an accredited four-year college or university in the US. Completed application is due to the SAHS CRC (C-225). A SAHS nominating committee will select the student that will be nominated, and paperwork will then be completed and submitted before the January 4, 2008 deadline. YOUNG AMERICAN AWARD |
| AMOUNT: Applicants not in college may receive an award, but only students who will attend or are attending college are eligible for the $7,500 scholarship. | |
| DETAILS: Open to students between the 15 and 25 years old. The Young American Awards are given to students who have excelled in their achievements and service to their community, state and nation. Nominees may or may not be youth participants in Learning for Life or members of the Boys Scouts of America. Nominations can be made by the Boys Scout troops, Explorer posts, Venturing crews, Learning for Life groups, individuals, and other community youth-serving organizations that share the same program objectives. Eligible students must have achieved outstanding accomplishments in the fields of art, athletics, business, community service, education, government, humanities, literature, math, music, religion, or science; have been involved in service in their community, state or country that adds to the quality of life, and must maintain an above average GPA. College students must submit a copy of their transcript, and all applicants must submit three to six recommendation letters from your troop, post, crew, group, school, teacher, counselor, employer, minister, business leader, civic leader, or other community leaders. Completed applications must be submitted to the local Council Office no later than December 1. AFROTC scholarships can be used in conjunction with the UA Scholars Scholarship. If you apply, get accepted, and activate the scholarship, you are UNDER NO OBLIGATION to the Air Force (no tuition payback and no service obligation) UNTIL you enter the first semester of your SOPHOMORE year. | Received By | DETAIL: AFS will award over $200,000 scholarships to students who will go abroad in the summer or fall of 2008 or winter 2009. The AFS Awards for Excellence Scholarship Program offers scholarships for study abroad to students who demonstrate leadership, service to the community, and academic excellence (GPA of 3.5 or equivalent). Students may study abroad for a year, a semester, or a summer. Students must be nominated by SAHS staff (teachers, counselors, honor society advisors, or principal). | Call ACLU of Alaska Office (258-0044) By | DETAILS: Open to seniors.The ACLU scholarship was established to reward young men and women who have been active participants in a civil rights or civil liberties struggle while in high school. Nominated candidates must be graduating seniors who intend to go to college for the next academic year; have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form student activism; and have a 3.0 GPA. Demonstrated financial need will also increase the candidate's chance of qualifying for the scholarship. Each local affiliate of the ACLU will nominate candidates for the 2008 scholarships. Candidates must submit a completed application and write a personal essay describing his or her reason for becoming a civil liberties/civil rights activist. The ACLU of Alaska Foundation will select one student as the affiliate's nominee for submission to the national ACLU for consideration with nominees from other states. Fifteen national winners will be selected by a panel of judges. Applicants must call the local ACLU of Alaska at 258-0044 before submitting an application. DETAILS: Open to seniors who are African American, Alaska Native/American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander, and Hispanic American students. Eligible students must be a citizen, legal permanent resident or national of the United States; have significant financial need (meeting the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria); have attained a cummulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) at the time of nomination; enter a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time degree seeking freshman in the fall of 2008; demonstrate leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria; and have all three (3) required forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form and Recommender Form) completed and submitted by the deadline at 7:30 a.m., December 7, 2007. Interested applicants are invited to attend an informational meeting from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on November 15, 2007 at the Alaska Railroad Depot, 411 West First Avenue. At the conclusion of the meeting applications will be available to students. Qualified students are selected for the Alaska Railroad Tour Guide Training Program. Training classes take place at the King Career Center Monday through Thursday from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm beginning January 28, 2008 through April 12, 2008. At the conclusion of the Training, students are interviewed and selected for positions as an Interpretive Tour Guide for the 2008 summer season. | DETAILS: Open to seniors. Fifty-two (52) scholarship awards - one from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Recipients will receive one-time scholarships of $10,000 each. Ten (10) AXA Achievers will be selected from the pool of 52 as national recipients, earning an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000, a computer and the offer of an internship at an AXA office. Applicant must: be a U.S. citizen or legal resident; be a current high school senior who plans to enroll in an accredited two-year or four-year college/university in the U.S. by fall 2008; demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in an activity in school, the community or the workplace; and be recommended by an unrelated adult who can attest to the student's achievement. In partnership with Anchorage Daily News, AT & T Alascom and the University of Alaska, the Mayor's office will salute a number of Anchorage young people who are making positive contributions to our community. These students, in turn, will each name their most inspirational teacher who will be presented with the Mayor's CREATE (Community Recognition for Educational and Teaching Excellence) Award. Students must demonstrate community service; have overcome a personal challenge; have a vision for themselves and others; be in good standing both academically and in terms of attendance; and be residents of the Municipality of Anchorage. The recognition campaign includes prestigious state and local awards in addition to media converage in local newspapers, on radio and television news. Nominations may come from school staff and board members, youth clubs and organization, the business community, or other teenagers. Any community member inspired by a teen's efforts may submit a nomination. There are 11 categories for nominations and awards.
